Originally named after the Spanish word for “shadow,” SOMBRA was reformed in Tokyo in 2024 by members Matthew Cataldo (vocals, synths, sampling, guitars), Ryosuke Ogasawara (bass, synths), and Dennis Sullivan (percussion). The band fuses 90s alternative rock with club house, techno, and trip-hop into an ever-evolving kaleidoscope of genre.

Their experimental intensity, layered complexity, and attention to catchy hooks have made their live shows uniquely captivating. Often described as music to turn off the lights to, SOMBRA’s dynamic live sets pair sound with immersive visuals and projections, and feature collaborations with Japan-based artists across multiple genres.

Prior to its current formation, the project traces back to 2018, when primary songwriter Matthew Cataldo was still living in Canada. After a long hiatus - partially due to Cataldo’s mental health and subsequent permanent relocation to Tokyo - he has become deeply active in the city’s music scene. Rooted in Shimokitazawa, he is also co-manager of Retronym Live House and Art Studio,  Tokyo’s only foreigner-run, Japanese-style live house, which has become a community hub for local bands.

With a renewed focus and a fully realized band identity, SOMBRA will return to the studio in spring 2026 to complete their first full-length album. SOMBRA has begun collaborating with producer/engineer nonomi, who mixed and mastered two of the new singles and will also be involved in the 2026 releases. The group plans to support the release with extensive touring through 2027, including shows across Asia and a planned return to North America and Europe.

「影」を意味するスペイン語を由来に持つSOMBRAは、2023年に東京で再始動した。メンバーはMatthew Cataldo（ボーカル、シンセ、サンプリング、ギター）、小笠原亮介（ベース、シンセ）、Dennis Sullivan（パーカッション）。90年代のオルタナティブ・ロックを軸に、クラブ・ハウス、テクノ、トリップ・ホップを融合させ、ジャンルを横断しながら絶えず変化するサウンドスケープを構築している。

実験性と強度を兼ね備えた楽曲、幾層にも重なる音像、そしてキャッチーなフックによって、SOMBRAのライブは独自の没入感を生み出している。しばしば「灯りを消して聴く音楽」と形容されるそのライブセットは、ダイナミックなバンド演奏に加え、映像やプロジェクションを用いたイマーシブな演出を特徴とし、日本を拠点に活動するさまざまなジャンルのアーティストとのコラボレーションも行っている。

現在の編成以前、プロジェクトの原点は2018年、中心人物であるMatthew Cataldoがカナダ在住時にまで遡る。長い活動休止期間を経て - その背景にはCataldo自身のメンタルヘルスの問題や東京への移住もあった - 現在は東京の音楽シーンで精力的に活動している。

下北沢を拠点に活動するCataldoは、東京唯一の外国人経営による日本式ライブハウス／アートスペース「Retronym Live House and Art Studio」の共同マネージャーも務めており、同会場はローカルバンドたちのコミュニティ拠点として機能している。

新たな方向性と確立されたバンド・アイデンティティを携え、SOMBRAは2026年春に初のフルアルバム制作のためスタジオへ戻る予定。近年はプロデューサー／エンジニアのnonomiとのコラボレーションも開始しており、新作シングル2曲のミックス／マスタリングを担当。2026年以降のリリースにも参加予定となっている。今後は2027年にかけてアジア各地でのツアーを予定しているほか、北米およびヨーロッパへの再進出も計画している。
